News Paper Article: Mentioning Moi!

Check out this Washington Daily News Article about the NEW yoga studio in Washington NC that I am thrilled to be on faculty.

Getting down with yoga

Editor’s note: BizLine is a weekly feature highlighting local businesses serving Washington and Beaufort County. This week’s BizLine reaches out to Down Dawg Yoga of Washington.
Since it’s across the street from the Turnage Theater, one might say Down Dawg Yoga is perfectly positioned.
Connie Cipriano, owner of the studio, often mentions the Turnage when giving directions to the storefront at 143 W. Main St., Washington.
Down Dawg’s show is all about finding a harmony of mind and body in this quiet, former retail space.
“I want people to feel comfortable being here,” said Cipriano, who opened the studio in September.

Originally from Maryland, by way of Charlotte, Cipriano moved to Washington in 2006.
Asked what brought her here, she replied, “Just the desire to live near the water in a smaller town.”
She started practicing yoga in the mid-1990s, and began teaching in 2006 at Hilton Head, S.C.
After moving to this river town, she quickly realized Main Street would be a good location for a yoga studio.
“I just put that in the back of my mind and played around with it for a while,” Cipriano said.
She opened Down Dawg Yoga amid trepidation just after the passage of Hurricane Irene, and the storm nearly changed her plans.
“I was toying with the idea of not opening,” she said, “but I did, and people still came.”
Each of Cipriano’s classes ranges from five to 11 students, with an array of ages and both sexes.
“It’s a great mix,” she said. “I’m so pleased.”
And she’s trying to counter the mistaken impression that yoga is solely for women. The message seems to be getting through: recently she had three men in an eight-member class.
“It’s really to bring yoga to everyone,” she said of her business.
Down Dawg Yoga offers yoga classes Tuesdays through Saturdays, and specific times are posted on its front door or on its website, www.downdawgyogastudio.com.
Classes are $12 per person, per session.
The 75-minute instruction is for people ages 15 and up.
Participants are not required to buy mats, but they are asked to wear comfortable clothing that isn’t too loose — the kind of apparel one would wear to a gym, Cipriano related.
No special equipment is required.
“All you need is bare feet,” she said.
She also teaches yoga at Lifestyles Medical Fitness Center in Washington.
“The benefits of yoga are just unlimited,” she said.
Cipriano’s fellow Down Dawg Yoga instructor is Michelle Shipley.
“She is someone that cares about people a great deal,” Cipriano said.
Future plans for Down Dawg Yoga include branching out with tai chi, belly dancing and meditation instruction.
Starting Friday, aikido martial-arts classes will begin there at $10 per class.
Incidentally, the name Down Dawg is taken from a yoga position called the downward-facing dog.
Cipriano said she took the position and “Southernized it” when seeking a name for her enterprise.
For more information, call Cipriano at 704-819-8875.

Re"treat" Updates

Spring Forward Re"treat" in Duck NC

Meet the lovely ladies aka broads who attended the weekend retreat.

Laura, Ebba, Kadra, ME, Brandi and Sharon

The weather was 87 degrees the day before the retreat at the beach...by the time we were heading there it was a glorious 57drees F. No one minded as the company inside was so warm and cozy. We settled into our Friday afternoon, choosing bedrooms in the beautiful beach house and joining the gang in the great room to write our retreat intentions. I like to set the weekend's intentions in writing. Why do we choose to be at a retreat? How does it fit with our daily lives and what do we hope to take away after our weekend. It's interesting to place an idea or statement on a page and revisit it over the course of the weekend as the statement takes on new meanings after each session each day - it deepens. These are personal intentions and are not shared unless there is a free willingness to do so by the individual.

We practiced a fully supported restorative yoga on the Friday night to set the tone for the weekend. Candle light, music, and only 15 postures supported by pillows and blankets and using straps to help the client really settle into a relaxation. I like to offer assists and a few elements taken from Pranasage that I learned while studying with Don and Amba Stapleton in Costa Rica. Janice Lane arrived toward the end of the practice to meet the gals. She joined in placing her super hot Reiki hands on the ladies. It was a delicious start to our weekend!

Of course you have to feed the body as much as the mind and we fueled it up with out hesitation!

My good friend Rachel Mills catered the vegetarian meals at the retreat. We feasted on cucumber mint salad, lentil soup, corn bread, butternut squash and apple bake over brown rice and orange and roasted red beet salad. My photos aren't doing the food justice - it was fresh and DELICIOUS!

Sunday morning we stretched our bodies gracefully in a Yin Yoga practice called sweet surrender. It was a beautiful opening practice that really was the finale to a beautiful weekend. Of course we journaled and shared open discussions about all kinds of things ....related to our lives and the lives of mating turtles ... (don't ask). It was a lovely weekend and I am looking forward to another already!

Master Class

One of the best things about traveling on vacation to Nosara Costa Rica is that it is a hot bed of Yoga talent. The Nosara Yoga Institute run by Don and Amba Stapleton is there. It's the school I attended to get my 200 hour yoga teacher certification, Blue Spirit is the Omega site for Yoga trainings and Yoga House is a studio right in the middle of the Guiones Beach business section.

Yoga House hosted AMY IPPOLOITI an Anusara Yoga practitioner. She has graced the cover of Yoga Journal this past January and been featured in all kinds of Yoga based articles in various magazines. She was hosting a two hour Anusara Master Class. My friend Stacey invited me to join and before I knew it we were shoulder to shoulder packed into a studio taking a class from the funny and engaging Amy Ippoloiti.

We opened into grace - and I did a hand stand - assisted - the first one since 2008 when I practiced hand stands with Todd Norian another Anusara practitioner - my arms were toast for the rest of the week. LOVED the challenge and getting to be a part of an impromptu master class in the middle of Central America.

This is Amy demonstrating a pose (or showing off as she calls it).
That's me standing at the end of her right hand ...
